Poul Kjaerholm föddes år 1929 i Østervrå, Danmark där han studerade till snickare innan han tog examen år 1953 vid Kunsthåndvaerkerskolen i Köpenhamn. Där studerade han under Hans Wegner och Jørn Utzon, två tongivande formgivare som påverkat dansk designhistoria och även kom att inspirera Kjaerholm.
